چکیده

Structural disorder appears to relate to the useful physical properties of ferroelectrics and relaxors. One such material is PZN, PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3. To explore what aspects of the disorder are specific to the polarised state, the temperature dependence of diffuse scattering in PZN has been investigated. Data were collected using both neutron and X-ray single crystal experiments in a range of temperatures from 100K to 500K. It has been found that some features, like the diffuse scattering from the B-site ordering, remain unchanged with change of temperature in terms of both intensity and peak shape. However, other diffuse scattering features evolve with T , for example the size-effect scattering around the Bragg peaks. The size-effect becomes less pronounced with increasing temperature, with the diffuse scattering becoming more symmetric around the Bragg peaks. The diffuse rods caused by the planar domains change only slightly with temperature. This indicates that the planar domains persist into the paraelectric state, but that the correlation between lead displacement and the average separation of adjacent lead atoms becomes weaker, suggesting that this ‘size-effect’ may be crucial to the ferroelectric properties.

Total scattering and pair distribution function analysis in modelling disorder in PZN (PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3)

The ability of the pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of total scattering (TS) from a powder to determine the local ordering in ferroelectric PZN (PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3) has been explored by comparison with a model established using single-crystal diffuse scattering (SCDS). While X-ray PDF analysis is discussed, the focus is on neutron diffraction results because of the greater extent of the da...

Topology and temperature dependence of the diffuse X-ray scattering in Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 ferroelectric single crystals.

The results of high-resolution measurements of the diffuse X-ray scattering produced by a perovskite-based Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 ferroelectric single crystal between 40 and 620 K are reported. The study was designed as an attempt to resolve numerous controversies regarding the average structure of Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3, such as the mechanism of the phase transitions between the tetragonal, P4bm, and rhombohe...

Measuring Single Crystal Diffuse Neutron Scattering on the Wombat High Intensity Powder Diffractometer

Single crystal diffuse scattering was collected on the Wombat high-intensity powder diffractometer at the OPAL reactor at the Bragg Institute. The difficulty in measuring diffuse scattering comes from its relatively low intensity compared to the Bragg peaks, a factor of 10−10 smaller. Wombat allows collection of diffuse scattering due to its high intensity and large two-dimensional detector. Di...

Ferroelectric Dynamics in the Perovskite Relaxor PMN

We review results obtained from recent neutron scattering studies of the lead-oxide class of perovskite relaxors PMN and PZN. A ferroelectric soft mode has been identified in PMN at 1100 K that becomes overdamped near 620 K. This is the same temperature at which polar nanoregions (PNR) begin to form, denoted by Td , and suggests that a direct connection exists between the soft mode and the PNR....
